19 Charterhouse Street

1/5
Image Overview

19 Charterhouse Street will extend the existing building from five to ten storeys, increasing its floor area from 5,500m² to over 7,800m². The uppermost levels will form landscaped ‘cloister gardens’ with panoramic views of St Paul’s Cathedral, Ludgate Hill, and the river. A new rooftop pavilion and roof terrace will provide shared amenities. An existing footbridge will be repurposed as vertical planted terraces, adding usable outdoor spaces and biodiversity. Situated just off Farringdon Road, the scheme will bring significant public realm and townscape improvements to this area. For instance, a south-facing double-height arcade on Charterhouse Street offers a welcoming orientation point for pedestrians in this busy area. A more open and accessible ground level will animate the streetscape, including affordable jewellery workspaces on Saffron Hill. “This significant project will go far beyond delivering an exemplary mixed-use retrofit scheme by acknowledging the site’s overlapping infrastructures – from transport to commerce, creative to ecology, and heritage – and will use architecture to maximise social, townscape and ecological benefits. The scheme will deliver much-needed biodiversity onto the site of the River Fleet and promote local cultural sustainability of the jewellery trade of Hatton Garden. We are also seeking to unlock wider urban benefits that could herald the growth of the ‘City Halo’, helping to soften the City’s edges, making them more permeable and integrated with neighbouring boroughs and encouraging active travel connections between the City and the West End.” -Deborah Saunt, Founding Director, DSDHA
