Architecture Today, November/December 2024, 334
Architecture Today’s November 2024 issue features a comprehensive 23-page spread on the Norton Folgate redevelopment, a project that is now complete after over a decade of collaboration. The project, led by master planners Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, comprises schemes from Stanton Williams, Morris+Company, DSDHA and East Architecture.
Spearheaded by British Land, the architects worked sensitively in the Elder Street Conservation Area to keep local history intact, integrating innovative urban designs within the conservation of historic structures and heritage.
DSDHA’s commitment to historic narratives proved pivotal to the scheme, as the practice helped ensure that heritage conservation remained a central focus. Their work involved a reinterpretation of Huguenot history and historic buildings, prioritising a sensitivity to the area’s unique architectural legacy while meeting demands of a modern workplace.
Described as ‘a development without ego,’ the project avoids homogeneity, creating a site that embraces the richness of its layered history while offering a fresh identity for the fabric of the area. The collaborative nature of the architects’ contributions reflects a shared commitment to thoughtful and responsive urban renewal.
